Animal Madness: Slot Overview

Play'n GO might be well known for creating darkly themed slots, rock games, big freaky grid slots, or joker games (amongst others). However, Animal Madness marks at least the third time the studio has headed out of town to make a farm-themed slot. The most recent was Piggy Bank Farm, and before that, way before that, was Crazy Cows. Animal Madness might be mechanically different from its forebears since it's a cluster paying grid slot, yet it's as heavily steeped in farm life, perhaps more so.

A sweeping orchestral score opens the game, revealing a pastoral setting which is both inviting and a little intimidating at the same time. Animal Madness is a cute game full of cute characters, yet the sky is ominously dark, and is that a storm forming in the background? Any feelings of dread an incoming downpour might induce are quickly washed away once the reels start spinning. Animal Madness has a relentless pace produced by quick hits and feature frequency. This frenzied activity is one of the game's main draws and is needed to make up for the fact there's no bonus round.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves, and the first order of the day is picking a bet from 10 p/c to $/€100. Hitting spin drops 25 symbols onto a 5x5 game panel, forming a win when at least 4 matching symbols are connecting in vertical or horizontal directions. Not a massive game, though a medium volatile one, which can hit its full winning potential on a single spin due to the inclusion of a cascade feature. This removes winning symbols from the reels and lets new ones drop down to close the gaps. Cascades continue until no new wins hit, feeding a math model that has a theoretical return value of 96.20%.

Players get eight pay symbols to make wins with, split between low pay crops and high pay livestock. Crops include wheat, corn, tomatoes, and pumpkins, paying 0.2x the bet for four of a kind, up to 40-200x the bet for an 18+ sized cluster. High pays are where we bump into chickens, goats, sheep, and cows paying 0.8-2x for four of a kind, maxing at 400-1,800x the bet for 18+ sized clusters. A variety of wild symbols may be added to the reels via the features; all wild types are able to substitute for any of the pay symbols to help build clusters.

Animal Madness: Slot Features

When a winning cluster is removed from the game board, it zooms into the mouth of a sunflower sitting next to the grid. After a certain number of cascades have been collected, a modifier is added to the board, like so:

  • 3 consecutive cascades trigger Wild Chickens – three 1x2 wild symbols are added to the reels.
  • 6 consecutive cascades trigger the Wild Goat – a 2x3 wild symbol is placed on the grid.
  • 9 consecutive cascades trigger Wild Sheep – two 2x2 wild symbols are added to the grid + symbols are upgraded.
  • 12 consecutive cascades trigger Wild Cow – a 3x3 sized wild is placed on the reels.

One more feature is Rabbit Mayhem, awarded randomly on any non-winning spin. When active, random symbols are removed from the play area, triggering a cascade.

Animal Madness: Slot Verdict

Few studios have as much expertise at designing grid slots as Play'n GO has, and Animal Madness is quite different to most others they've done. It doesn't follow the usual template of collecting winning symbols to charge a meter, though when you think about it, collecting consecutive cascades to trigger features is pretty much the same thing. The difference between this and most Play'n GO grid slots is the lack of an ultimate bonus round. Even a relatively toned-down grid slot like Lordi Reel Monsters fired off a potentially devastating free spin when a collection sequence was complete. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, and some players may actually prefer this method.

Without a long-term goal like triggering a bonus round, Animal Madness does have a treadmill-like quality made up of sprints when the features trigger and jogging on the spot for much of the rest the time. What makes it entertaining, for a while at least, is that the hits do come pretty thick and fast. This led to quite frequent feature triggers, though getting past the second level wasn't easy. Also, the Rabbit Mayhem feature wasn't super rare either, which clears a few pesky symbols out of the way while feeding the sunflower in the process. What's good about the wild symbol placement features is they pretty much guarantee a win when they are added to the grid. This means two things - you get some cash, and the cascades roll on. What's also good is that at the upper end of the paytable, payouts can be substantial. At best, it's possible to win up to 2,250x the bet when playing Animal Madness.

To use the treadmill analogy again, after pounding out the miles, eventually, you just want to step off, whether from exhaustion or boredom and there comes a time when Animal Madness' frenzy starts to wear thin. Till that happens, though, there's some carefree gaming to be had for the right player, amidst a flurry of cute animal antics.

Good

Animal Madness can be fun when you’re caught in the flow, but its lack of depth wears thin after a while.
